Philly Street Art

Walking the streets of Philly it is easy to see there is an active street art scene.  I recently found a flicker group which compiles images of the found art.  The images bring up the debate over what is vandalism and what is art.  I am not well versed in the debate and would love to hear others' thoughts.  Below are some of the images that caught my eye.  Check out Philly Street Art for more.

  1. Street Art is vandalism that you like. A cynical take, but I think that's actually it. It's a semantic difference. Tagging certainly qualifies as vandalism, but can be so compelling as to rise to the title of street art, yet the most clever re-appropriation of public/corporate space, while always street art, is always prosecuted under the name vandalism. Vandalism is the legal term for street art.
But an active graffiti/street art community can really spice up a town. Dig the work showcased at http://woostercollective.com/ or, two of my favorite artists, Posterchild at http://www.bladediary.com/ and Mark Jenkins at http://www.xmarkjenkinsx.com/
